DETAILS

Harvested from Yangarra's high sands old bush vines planted in 1946 on 46-million year old North Maslin Sands. Vines from this unique piece of Australian history yield concentrated wines with inherent purity and balance. These vines hold the potential for immense power. The approach here is to handle this fruit with a delicate touch and minimal extraction; to harness this energy towards graceful intensity rather than boldness, with elevated aromatic complexity, clarity and detail that only old vines can deliver.

WINEMAKING NOTES

A portion was fermented as whole bunches, left alone for ten days to infuse, with some gentle splashing later in ferment to open up aromas and fully express the beautiful colour gifted by this variety. After three weeks, this portion was pressed to tank for settling and racked to 500 L puncheon barrels (6+ y.o) for two years on lees.

The remaining portion was gently de-stemmed and fermented with minimal handling and extraction; infusion, and gentle plunging twice per day during peak, with some “splashing over” later in ferment. This portion was left on skins for a further eight weeks before pressing to 500 L seasoned oak puncheons (6+ y.o) for two years on lees.

The portions were racked and blended to tank for a further two weeks before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The final blend was 33% WB and 67% DS.

ORIGIN

Yangarra Vineyard

I first worked on the Yangarra vineyard 30 years ago and have a special connection to its old vines and ancient sandy soils. There’s a uniquely “Australian” atmosphere that feels beachy, coastal and native, yet Mediterranean at the same time. By way of my long connection with the vineyard and its people, I enjoy my own unique dedicated sections of the vineyard across old bush vine Grenache planted in 1946, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc from soils of sand over ironstone. Dry-grown on free-draining soils, yielding gorgeous wines with perfume, clarity and stunning texture that only old vines on sand can deliver.

Yangarra is a genuine pioneer of biodynamic and organic farming in Australia. This is evident in the quality of the wines and the elevated sense of balance and purity – and place. The
fruit is a natural fit for my craft – a gift to work with.
